The best time to discover an enclosure problem is before the gecko is on the way. Use this checklist to prepare the habitat, supplies, records, and arrival plan. Adjust the details to the animal’s size and the breeder’s current routine.
Enclosure
- A secure, vertically oriented enclosure appropriate for the animal’s current size
- Reliable door latches and no unsafe cord or ventilation gaps
- Ventilation that allows a humidity rise and dry-down cycle
- A stable stand away from direct sun, drafts, smoke, aerosols, and heavy vibration
Climbing structure and cover
- Branches, cork, vines, or ledges that create connected routes
- Foliage and hides at more than one height
- Perches that are secure and cannot collapse under the animal
- No sharp wire, sticky adhesive, unstable rock, or decoration with entrapment gaps
Monitoring
- Digital temperature monitoring at a representative location
- Digital humidity monitoring
- A plan for heat waves and unusually cold rooms
- Optional secondary instruments to verify suspicious readings
Install and observe the instruments before arrival. An unopened thermometer on a shelf does not protect the animal.
Food and water
- The same complete crested gecko diet the breeder currently uses
- Small washable feeding cups and a secure ledge
- A shallow water dish with fresh water
- Any approved insect supplies needed for the established routine
- A method for labeling mixed food and discarding it on schedule
Substrate and cleaning
- A substrate suitable for the animal’s age and your monitoring needs
- Paper towels for quarantine or simplified observation when appropriate
- Reptile-safe cleaning supplies used according to label directions
- Dedicated bowls, brushes, and waste tools
- A safe temporary holding container for enclosure maintenance
Arrival supplies
- The breeder’s tracking and contact information
- Photo or video capability if documentation is required
- A secure room for opening the package
- A clean transport container for local pickup
- Enough schedule flexibility to receive or collect promptly
Records
Create a simple record with the gecko’s name or ID, hatch date if known, sex status, purchase date, breeder, current weight, diet, and important lineage or health notes. Continue recording weights and notable changes. The goal is to identify trends, not to create paperwork for its own sake.
Veterinary plan
Locate an exotics veterinarian who treats reptiles and confirm their hours. Save the number for the regular clinic and the nearest emergency option. Do not wait for an urgent problem to learn that a nearby clinic does not see geckos.
Final 24-hour check
Verify the enclosure temperature and humidity pattern, fill water, secure decor, prepare food, confirm the delivery or pickup plan, and avoid last-minute major changes. Ask the breeder for the most recent weight and feeding information.
