Before the gecko arrives

- Choose a complete commercial crested gecko diet and confirm how the breeder has been feeding the animal.
- Prepare a clean water source, feeding ledge, hides, and easy-to-sanitize surfaces.
- Identify an experienced reptile veterinarian before an urgent problem develops.
Enclosure and climbing space
Crested geckos are arboreal. A tall enclosure with branches, cork, vines, foliage, and multiple resting levels allows more natural movement than an open box with decorations only at the bottom. The enclosure should be escape-resistant and provide enough visual cover for the gecko to feel secure without preventing airflow.
Young animals are often started in simpler setups that make feeding and waste easier to monitor. As the gecko grows, increase usable vertical space and complexity. Avoid cohabitation unless you have advanced experience and a specific, carefully managed reason; individual housing is the clearest way to monitor feeding, weight, waste, injury, and behavior.
Temperature and humidity
Crested geckos generally thrive at moderate room-like temperatures and can be harmed by prolonged excessive heat. The correct range depends on the animal, enclosure, ventilation, season, and measuring location. Use digital instruments, create a safe gradient, and avoid relying on how the room feels.
Humidity should rise after misting and then fall rather than remaining constantly saturated. That daily cycle supports hydration while allowing the enclosure to breathe. Persistent wetness can encourage microbial growth, while chronically dry conditions can contribute to poor sheds and dehydration. Measure, observe, and adjust instead of misting by a fixed habit alone.
Feeding and water
A reputable complete crested gecko diet is the nutritional foundation for most pet animals. Mix and replace it according to the manufacturer’s directions. Insects may be offered when appropriate for the animal and the breeder’s established routine, but they should not displace a balanced staple diet. Fresh water should remain available even when the gecko also drinks droplets after misting.
Appetite can vary with age, season, stress, breeding condition, and the size of the feeding portion. Small tongue marks may be easy to miss. Monitor trends in body condition and weight rather than judging health from a single untouched bowl.
Handling and settling in
New arrivals need time to settle. Keep early interactions calm and brief, avoid chasing, and handle close to a safe surface. Crested geckos can jump suddenly and may drop their tails under stress. A dropped tail does not regrow.
Cleaning and health monitoring
Remove waste and spoiled food promptly. Clean bowls and high-contact surfaces regularly, and perform deeper cleaning as needed for the substrate and enclosure style. Track weight, appetite, shedding, stool, activity, grip, posture, and appearance. Sudden or persistent changes deserve prompt attention.
Seek veterinary care for significant weight loss, repeated regurgitation, weakness, swelling, abnormal breathing, trauma, persistent diarrhea, difficulty shedding around toes or eyes, or any change that concerns you. Online advice cannot diagnose an individual animal.
